Who is Tinashe?

If I were to ask the average person if they know who Tinashe is, there’s a chance that a good portion of them wouldn’t know her by name. However, if I asked them if they loved to get 2 On, a much greater number would know what I’m talking about (and probably start singing along to that effortlessly catchy melody). Since the release of that song in 2014, which coincided with the release of her debut album, Aquarius, Tinashe has continued pumping out hits on hits as though she’s a one woman hit-making factory.

The problem is that nobody I talk to ever knows what these hits are. I mean seriously, people…you don’t even know Nasty? Company? Anything from Songs for You? It’s a serious issue that has plagued myself and several other Tinashe fans for over a decade. Now, in the wake of her eighth studio album, some dedicated fans have teamed up to change this.

The Album Release

Tinashe released her new album Popstar, a meta-narrative album on what it means to be…well, a popstar, on September 25 of this year. Fans were eager to see what the critical perception would be, considering her previous projects hadn’t been received poorly but had been seemingly scored too low. Five days after the release of Popstar, the fated Pitchfork album review dropped…and it was glorious.

A 9.0, a score which was not only unprecedented for Tinashe but hadn’t been achieved by any other album that has dropped this year. This gave the true Tinashe fans a glimmer of hope: maybe, just maybe, this album cycle would be different for her. She could move up from an “underrated” artist to someone who gets mainstream attention again. But the fans knew they’d have to work for it, which is where the mobilization all began…it was time to uplift Tinashe.

#UpliftTinashe

The trend #UpliftTinashe was started by dedicated Tinashe fans in the wake of this Pitchfork review. While it began as something more lighthearted, it quickly became a space for people to share their genuine appreciation for not just the singer’s new album, but for the entirety of her illustrious career. The trend was even referenced when Charli XCX brought Tinashe out as a surprise guest during her recent Austin City Limits set, with Charli saying “f*cking uplift her baby!” Hopefully this means that Tinashe will have the same sort of meteoric rise that Charli has experienced within the last few years as well.

How Can I Uplift Tinashe?

It’s important that we continue to uplift Tinashe, not just during this social media trend or the album cycle, but throughout the rest of her career. She is simply too talented of an artist to not receive the recognition she deserves. As someone who has seen her perform live four times now, it cannot be overstated how much of a life-changing experience it is. Her voice is always lovely, her dancing is truly impressive, and her charisma can’t be contained by any stage. PLEASE go check her out if she’s performing at a venue near you.

As a parting gift, I leave you, the reader, with ten must-listen Tinashe songs from a longtime fan (myself, duh). You’re welcome for these transformative songs.

  1. Cold Sweat
  2. Ride of Your Life
  3. Ooh La La
  4. No Contest
  5. Feelings
  6. Cash Race
  7. Naturally
  8. Needs
  9. Thirsty
  10. Pillow Fight

Bonus: Rascal (Superstar), Throw a Fit, and her feature on Slumber Party by Britney Spears. Just trust me.
