And then there was me, so compelled by the confidence pink hair seemed to bestow, I ventured out to CVS and bought a $15.99 bottle of L’Oréal Colorista semi-permanent dye of my own. The pigment, meant for Level 7-10 hair, didn’t quite take to my natural brown, mousy shade, but in the sunlight, the ends of my curls shimmered a rosy mauve. My itch for pink had been scratched. I felt renewed, ready to enter my last year of grad school.

Pink hair went from something I was watching and talking about to something I actually wanted to try.
