Love Island Season 8 took the nation by storm this summer. From having one islander who always did the splits, to one who wasn't true to his name, it was safe to say this season had a very interesting cast. One of the unique additions to the villa was Beatriz Hatz, the first Love Island contestant who has a prosthetic leg. She competed in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympics and won bronze in long jump at the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympics.

This was a significant moment because dating and reality TV shows heavily focus on physical attraction and a lot of times, have strict standards for how the cast looks. For the producers to include someone who had a very prominent physical disability was a big step for visibility and inclusion within the disabled community. Love Island has millions of viewers tuning in each week, and giving Beatriz the platform to share her experiences was an incredibly effective way to increase awareness of what life is like for people with physical disabilities.

I think it’s important to be exposed to people who come from all walks of life. This helps us gain new perspectives and be more empathetic towards other people. I didn’t know who Beatriz Hatz was before watching the most recent season but I was excited when she started talking about her disability and accomplishments. Since people with physical disabilities are rarely cast in mainstream TV shows this was a really nice change I hope they take into consideration when casting for future seasons.

I really enjoyed watching Beatriz on Love Island. I love learning about new perspectives and seeing how people live their lives differently. Beatriz balanced talking about the challenges she overcame and letting her personality shine. Unlike some of the islanders, Beatriz wasn’t afraid to tell you how things were, even if she had to ruffle some people’s feathers. I think that part of the reason why she was so upfront was because she has already overcome so much, she wasn’t in the mood to deal with petty drama. And that made it very entertaining to watch her interact with other islanders.

I’m really passionate about advertising accessible features, products, and services because I think it’s a unique challenge that helps make people’s lives easier. I think it’s fun to do a lot of research into under-represented groups of people and help them get more visibility. Being exposed to people who have drastically different experiences helps us create deeper strategies and allows brands to connect with consumers on a more personal level.
